“You Must Take Some Risk to Create Something New”

In talking with a colleague at work the other day, I was trying to make a point that I think people are becoming interested in other countries, other cultures, other ways of life because of how accessible the Net has made it. And I was using an amazing Volvo site I had seen a couple years ago as my example of how the Net allows us to get a taste of a place or a way of doing things.

This morning I found the site again, and had to blog it. Take a look for yourself. Then go here to see a Flash movie about the ad agency that made it. One of the agency’s bosses makes a pithy comment at the end that just resonates:

“You must take some risk to create something new.”

Indeed.

Kimochi-ii!

YouTube rules. How else could my friend Bruce have dug up this gem of a old Sega Dreamcast racing game ad? The video is pretty self-explanatory, but “kimochi-ii” in Japanese means “feels good.” This screengrab doesn’t do the ad any justice. Just click play; it’s 30 seconds guaranteed to make you smile.

Make sure you watch the whole thing: the punch line comes right at the end, and is worth the set up.

Killersurvey Update

I’ve been working on a site with my friend Tim Kane called Killersurvey. Killersurvey is intended to make it easy for anyone to freely create a survey on any topic and solicit feedback painlessly.

One of the things we’re working on is a simple code snippet component that shows off a survey’s results. I created a survey yesterday on the World Cup final, and here it is:

World Cup Final
A few questions on the World Cup.

1. Who will make it to the final?
    Percent Totals
Germany    100% 3
Italy   0% 0
Portugal    66.7% 2
France   0% 0

Ray Ozzie: Live Clipboard

Heard a recent Gillmor Gang podcast this morning driving in to work that really caught my interest: Ray Ozzie premiered at the eTech conference a concept he calls Live Clipboard. He has some screencasts of his demo here.

The basic idea is copying structured data from one webpage to another using the same gestures of copy and paste we’re all used to using computers. Script and XML push the data between browser windows.

But Ray’s thinking is even more interesting to read, placing web services, mashups, and users themselves mashing up data between sites in a conceptual framework that tries to make sense of why RSS, web services, and the Web itself are so interesting.

If you have 5 minutes today, read Ray’s blog.

Update: Here’s a webpage demoing the concept.
