February 1 is a day that no one can ever forget.

Just when it all seems so easy, and so routine, and a only few among us follow the space program with any regularity, something like this unfortunately happens. And it shows us that we live in a country where we can push the limits of our collective reach everyday and hardly even notice.

Would that today had stayed commonplace and boring — and spared seven exceptional lives.
