Wireless and Internet Market Statistics
A good overview of the wireless market, from the Wall Street Journal:
Topline facts:
- 51% of the US population in major metropolitan areas owns a mobile phone.
- look, feel, size, and weight matter for people considering a new phone
- 67% of the US population are online
- 13% of the US population have broadband
- PDA shipments are down, with Palm in the #1 spot (34%), and Sony in #2 (14%)
- VC deals are down 48%
Mobile Digital Cameras
Steve Jarrett, a guy I think knows the mobile computing space very well, brought up a great point today: this year the number of mobile phones with cameras will exceed the number of digital cameras out there (around 20 million). At the same time, the 1 megapixel barrier will be broken: significant in that 1 megapixels is what you need to print a decent quality 4×6″ photograph. A big year coming.

Gartner said Thursday that its November 2002 survey of 36 outsourcing companies showed that “offshore application management,” or providing such management from an overseas office, was ranked as the highest-growth service opportunity in 2003. Application management means overseeing business software such as SAP or Oracle systems, and includes tasks such as fixing bugs and installing upgrades.

February 1 is a day that no one can ever forget.
Just when it all seems so easy, and so routine, and a only few among us follow the space program with any regularity, something like this unfortunately happens. And it shows us that we live in a country where we can push the limits of our collective reach everyday and hardly even notice.
Would that today had stayed commonplace and boring — and spared seven exceptional lives.
