Found two interesting weblogs in Brasil. I haven’t read them in depth yet, but I’ve been looking for something like this since the New Year trip down:

Thursday, January 16th, 2003The Roaming Problem
Wednesday, January 15th, 2003Triad works to wed Wi-Fi to cellular :
Avaya, Proxim and Motorola are codeveloping a mobile device that roams between cell phone networks and public or private Wi-Fi wireless hot spots, company executives said Tuesday. (from CNET)
Although the NYTimes article made it sound like this move would be tied at connecting WAN networks with WLAN ones, this CNET article has quotes from people hinting at more: that roaming among different WLAN access points may also be in the works. Since credentials and encryption keys can change from one access point to another, currently users need to manually switch profile settings when they move among access points.
Another issue for WLAN comes to light in this article: battery consumption. Does WLAN not have any power management features?
Internet Phone Calls
Tuesday, January 14th, 2003Vonage offers low cost local and national long distance calling over a broadband connection at home. A Cisco router links regular telephones with your home network to route incoming and outgoing calls through the Internet. Apparently, its well implemented and works as you’d imagine.
Plus, it’s cheap. At 9 cents a minute to Rio de Janeiro, and 7 cents a minute to Tokyo, it’s doing something right.
The Rise of the Stupid Network
Tuesday, January 14th, 2003Ever on top of things, Omar Javaid was kind enough to point me to something I hadn’t seen yet, David Isenberg’s classic The Rise of the Stupid Network. Thanks Omar. If you haven’t read this, it’s worth your time.
Projection Keyboard
Monday, January 13th, 2003One of the biggest problems in wireless is a usable input method form factor for small mobile devices. This projection keyboard concept could revolutionize the problem of trying to make a device small enough to fit in the pocket, yet equipped with a QWERTY keyboard for rapid text entry.
