Some key numbers, according to this article:
- Cometa is looking to deploy around 20,000 access points for their goal of being within 5 minutes of anyone in the country
- “Critics and rivals” say that 100,000 access points would be needed to have the reach of a cell-phone system
Even if Cometa wanted to have the reach of a a cell-phone system, the cost of deploying and supplying those 100,000 nodes would certainly be less than licensing spectrum AND deploying cell towers. Plus, Cometa has said its goal is not to be everywhere, but rather to be within 5 minutes of everyone – different things.
