NTT DoCoMo Starts Developing Downlink High Speed Packet Transfer Technology for FOMA
NTTDoCoMo is working on even faster downlink data to FOMA terminals. With High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), terminals would be able to enjoy a theoretical maximum of 14.4Mbps using a 5Mhz frequency band.
I’m not sure if this means only terminals need to be upgraded, with no additional infrastructure upgrades needed.
This looks like a clear move to get W-CDMA to the levels of 802.11b. It’s interesting, though, how long it will take the company to get to the trial stage: test transmissions in autumn 2003, with the goal of deployment in 2004-5.
What will 802.11 do in the meantime?
