Akonix approach to enterprise instant messaging

Mentions Akonix, a San Diego venture run by a mentor of mine, Peter Shaw. Akonix takes a different approach than most attempts at IM in two ways:
- it monitors P2P and IM traffic at the periphery of the enterprise network, enforcing corporate policies defined and managed by IT
- it secures internal IM communcation by preventing it from even leaving the corporate network. Thus, corporate information never travels over the public Internet in the clear. At the same time, it allows corporate users to still use (and be “available” on) the standard IM networks (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc).
